The word “Jab” evolved from the French word diable (devil). When the French enslavers brought Africans to the island they referred to them as “black devils”. Post emancipation, Grenadians adopted Jab as a show of strength, resistance and reclamation. Every carnival Monday players cover themselves in oil, mud and molasses, and don horns and other “intimidating” visuals becoming the embodiment of French fear. The Mas begins at 3AM and continues down the road until 10AM. Jab is a transformation from everyday to an ancestral warrior spirit. A spirit that is passed from generation to generation. \n\nThis is what I captured that morning.
